LPL is unique in that it is focuses solely on liquid propulsion rocket engines and is operated entirely by students.

Liquid propulsion systems are often more complex than those used for solid rockets but they offer some unique benefits well worth the trouble.  Liquid-fueled rocket engines allow for variable thrust, easily comparable, controllable, and repeatable tests, and are often more easily re-used than their solid and hybrid counterparts.    For these reasons, and many more, LPL's main focus is on developing reliable liquid rocket engine technology.
